I collaborated with Data Education in Schools and Digital Skills Education to create a brand identity and graphics for their “Day of Data” events.

This was a one-day education festival for teachers and students across Edinburgh and the South East. At these events, learners improved their data literacy and digital skills and explored why data is so important to their lives now and in the future

Working on this project allowed me to contribute to a forward-thinking mission dedicated to equipping the next generation with essential data skills.

Full Case Study

Working in the BBC's Account team, I’ve led the creation of the Account Design System, centralising design components, guidance, and documentation for Sign In, Registration, Verification, and Settings.

The project included auditing existing designs, structuring the system, leading a team of designers in migrating assets to Figma, working with developers to align our documentation and component structure, and communicating our process and updates to a range of stakeholders.

This Design System has improved efficiency, consistency, and collaboration while serving as a foundation for additional Account team projects.

I collaborated with Data Education in Schools and Digital Skills Education to create a brand identity and graphics for their “Day of Data” events.

This project was primarily focused on branding. I drew inspiration from various sources, emphasising themes related to information technology, data visualisation, and computing. The design underwent numerous iterations, consistently incorporating the concept of data visualisation as a central theme.

Data Education in Schools produce a number of events, so I provided them with a diverse logo and style guide that can be reapplied to events in the future.

The logo sits against a block featuring a data waveform and three square edges, allowing it to fit into a grid-based design system. This was brought to life in the poster (above), which I also produced as part of this project.

Before this project, our team struggled with design and engineering inefficiencies due to the absence of a centralised component library.

Designers repeatedly recreated common elements, leading to duplication and inconsistency, while developers referenced multiple, out of sync libraries, and in some cases styled components completely locally.

We were in the process of migrating from Sketch to Figma, which left our work scattered across different software formats. Our guidelines, mostly stored in text documents, often went overlooked.

As a result, the Account experience became fragmented for users—some areas adhered to modern, accessible GEL design standards, while others relied on outdated legacy patterns. This inconsistency risked eroding user trust and causing further issues.

Branding

Designed for Print

Many of the assets I created for this project were specifically designed for printed use. This required careful consideration in selecting colours and shapes that would be well-suited to the materials and sizes they would be printed on. As a result, a set of print-safe colours were created to compliment the dynamic choices made for digital.

The Day of Data logo is particularly distinctive, presented in a variety of predetermined colours throughout the physical event space. Each colour variation was chosen to enhance visibility and engagement, ensuring the logo stood out in different contexts and environments.

“Sam did fantastic work producing a brand identity that was modern, funky, and full of energy. We didn’t want Day of Data to feel like a boring school lesson - it was meant to feel like a festival. The visuals really delivered on that vision and looked brilliant both in our presentations and on banners across the colleges.”
